How to develop your writing style
Read other writers
Reading is one of the best ways to develop your writing style. You pick up all sorts of tips from other writers, like how they structure their sentences, what words and phrasing they use to convey their ideas, how they structure their pieces, how they write their introductions and conclusions.
Pay particular attention to their voice and tone in their writing: are they serious and factual, positioning themselves as experts? Or are they warm and engaging, funny and down to earth, inviting you in to their community?
Read books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers in your niche and beyond. Try them all on like clothes, borrow and keep a list of favorite phrases, stories and articles.
Write regularly
The more you write, the more you’ll develop your writing style. Set aside time every day or week to write, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Look back through your writing and see how your voice develops over time.
Experiment with different styles
Don’t be afraid to try new things! This is your time to try on a few different hats, and see how you respond to different needs. Think to yourself: what if I had a wide variety of clients? How would I write for each one of them? Write up some sample pieces for vastly different companies, and see what comes out.
Experiment with different writing styles, tones, and voices by setting up little problems for yourself and solving them. Look around the house and choose a few different items, like a smoke detector, a box of cookies and your favorite party shoes.
Next, write a set of content for each one: a blog, a website blurb or page, a newsletter, and social media blurbs. How are the sets different? What words, what tone, what points did you use? Try a few different versions of each to see which one sounds best to you.
Build your samples
In case you’re worried about investing time in this process, here’s a boost: you can use your practice pieces in your writing portfolio. Your samples don’t need to be published, they just need to be good.
Edit and revise
Editing and revising are essential parts of the writing process. As you revise your work, pay attention to your writing style. Are there areas where you can tighten your sentences or use more vivid language?
Getting feedback
It’s always a good idea to get other people’s opinions of your writing. While it may be perfectly clear to you what you mean, your piece could be missing important elements you’ve overlooked, or there may be sections that can be clarified.
